A few years ago a friend and I spent a summer working at a guest ranch near Cody, Wyoming. Long days outside in hot, dry country. From rock-climbing and fly-fishing to chopping firewood and driving fenceposts, we put our clothes through the wringer—and more often than not, they fell apart within a couple weeks. If only we’d known about Arborwear back then. Their burly Double Seat Climber Shorts would have covered every waist at the ranch, making us all just a bit happier about getting dressed in the morning. With 10-ounce canvas, double front and back panels, and an 8 3/4-inch inseam, these stalwart shorts protect the body core while keeping your lower legs cool on those hot summer days. As the name suggests, these shorts were originally designed for tree-climbers needing both flexibility and ample protection from sharp branches. Suitably, the fit is snug but comfortable; after a few washings they’ll soften up and feel better than your favorite jeans. “Made for lumberjacks on vacation,” as owner Paul Taylor quips, the Climber Shorts come in three colors and a range of sizes. To pick up a pair, stop by Barrel Mountaineering in downtown Bozeman or order direct from the company. Arborwear also makes two other shorts models—slightly less rugged, for slightly less demanding work. Check out their website for details.
