Pogge, Drew

I'm a big fan of KISS (the acronym, not the band.) Keep It Simple, Stupid. And that's exactly what G3's latest tech binding, the ION LT 12, does. Following on the heels of the much-lauded original ION (now in its sophomore season), the LT is a stripped-down version designed for weight-conscious backcountry skiiers who still want a full-featured binding and reliable retention. By removing the brakes and toe step-in guides, G3 saved over a half-pound per pair without affecting touring or downhill function (net weight is now 2lbs. per pair). Release values to 12 and a forward-pressure-style heel provides solid downhill chops, while an ingenious ice-clearing toe mechanism, pole-actuated flip-up heel risers, and strong, wide toe pattern ensure easy, reliable touring function. I've skied them hard in both backcountry powder and crappy ski-area crud, and they simply work. $430; genuineguidegear.com
