If I hear the word “game-changer” applied to one more piece of new gear, I’m gonna lose my shit. So no, the new Redington Vapen hasn’t changed the game of fly fishing—but it is an innovative rod, one that demonstrates a noticeable difference from its predecessors. Fast, responsive, easy to cast, and strong as hell, the Vapen—which means “weapon” in Swedish—has high-density carbon wrapped around a graphite core; these counter-wrapped layers yield strength, light weight, and superior vibration dampening. I shot everything from this rod—ultralight dries, bulky tandem rigs, weighted streamers—and like a good all-purpose pocketknife, it was there for me every time. Among the rod’s more salient features is the cool polymer grip, which is spongy for comfort and remains tacky even when wet—no more hand-slip when the fish of the day hauls hard against the current. The Vapen has been sending ripples through the fly-fishing community since its release late last season, and for good reason: it's a damn fine rod. Available at Sportsman's Warehouse, Grizzly Outfitters, Sweetwater Fly Shop, and the Tackle Shop. $350; redington.com.
