Emigrant Peak is a formidable mountain in the Absaroka Range, towering over Paradise Valley and the town of Emigrant. The ascent is relentless from the start—this is a trail for fit hikers only. The trail passes through timber and meadows at the lower elevations; after parallelling a long livestock fence, the trail fades and soon disappears. Just keep hiking up. Above treeline, follow the northwest ridge, scrambling over rocks and scree and past several false peaks until you reach the summit. Be aware of afternoon thunderstorms during the summer months—this 10,000-plus-foot peak is a veritable lightning rod.

Emigrant Peak, Paradise Valley, Montana

Directions: From Livingston, head south on Hwy. 89 to Emigrant. Follow East River Rd. to Sixmile Creek Rd. (toward Dailey Lake and Sixmile Creek). Follow this gravel road for about 4 miles until you reach a small fenced-in parking lot on the left. Drive through the gate and into the Sixmile Creek drainage, then turn left toward the Gold Prize Creek trailhead.

A Paradise Valley must-do. Amazing country, long beautiful hike, unparalleled views up top. On a clear day you can see the Tetons.

How could anyone rate this hike as one star. This is the quintessential Bozeman hike to determine how out of shape you actually are. It's a blistering hike with beautiful panoramic alpine views. I would suggest it to anyone wanting to test their endurance. I will give it five stars without even taking into consideration that outstanding meal and a warm soak are right around the corner.

What's your take?

So, what do you REALLY think?
