For years skullcaps have been on my mind. From experimental homebrews wadded painfully beneath an old-school Pro-Tec Helmet, to “top o’ the line” headpieces that somehow wound up in my gear bag, I’ve learned the hard way that keeping one’s head warm and relatively dry while climbing, whooshing, and boofing through our superb topography is a tad more complicated than I once thought.

Enter Liphe Outdoor Ware. Bozeman local Tate Chamberlain has paid his dues in the mountains and has brought that knowledge and experience to market with the superbly designed Liphe Skull Cap aimed at climbers, skiers, and also whitewater boaters. A brushed interior of fine-fibered wool keeps things toasty on the inside while the durable, weather resistant soft outershell material known as Schoeller Dryskin puts up a solid ten rounds against even the harshest wintry elements. However, where the 1.4-ounce skullcap really shines is in its ultralight form fit. The stretchy shell material conformed to my head shape nicely, without clinging or squeezing—and it’s the first skullcap I’ve tried that didn’t bunch up and give me a pressure headache after a couple of hours in a helmet. The snug fit and sleek profile make this a perfect headpiece for powder hounds and ice climbers alike. In even the harshest conditions, the skullcap provided ample warmth and wind protection, while the hood of an outershell jacket can be utilized in times of heavy precip. I also noticed how well the cap breathed compared to other brands. This is key for alpine rock and ice routes, and any powdery backcountry travel where keeping your head warm can be problematic. I was thoroughly impressed with both the materials and thoughtful design of this skullcap, not to mention the solid performance in varying weather conditions and ability to switch from sport to sport throughout the year without sacrifice. For thirty bucks, the versatile Liphe Softshell Skullcap is tough to beat. Nice work Tate.
