Wandering Through Paradise

Your Livingston-area activity list.

If you find yourself in Livingston this spring, don’t plan on much downtime—the historic Western town is full of fun activities for the whole family.

Hike
Get your heart pumping with a hike in the Absarokas just south of town. Passage Creek Falls at Mill Creek or Pine Creek Falls are both good options; for a real lung-buster, summit Livingston Peak via the Suce Creek trail. Whatever length and level you like, local outfitter Timber Trails can provide maps and information. To stretch your legs without leaving town, check out Livingston’s in-town trail system—try Myer’s River View trail along the Yellowstone, or take your pooch to the Moja Park trail, which leads to an off-leash dog park.

Fish
While the hikes are great, Livingston is most famous for the fishing. Stop by Sweetwater Fly Shop on Hwy. 89 or Angler’s West in Emigrant to find out what’s biting. After the river, check out the history of fly fishing at the International Federation of Fly Fishers and in their collection of angling artifacts, literature, and art.

Eat
Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, slide into Gil’s Goods for one of their signature pizzas, or gobble down a burger and draft beer at the Office Lounge. Matt’s Butcher Shop on the north side of town has delicious deli sandwiches and other take-out options. If you find yourself farther south in the valley, stop by the Cowboy’s Grille in Gardiner for some ribs and hand-cut fries.

Relax
For those indoor days, or when recovering after a long hike the day before, check out Livingston’s cultural offerings, like the Parks Reece Gallery or the Livingston Center for Arts and Culture. The Depot Center Museum is an old rail station turned museum, open every year from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
