While winter is a ways off, we still have plenty of cold nights and crisp mornings to endure, neither of which is going to keep me inside. So I opted for the 800-fill goose-down Alpini Anorak from Brooks-Range. It’s toasty warm and designed to be worn over layers, meaning only the coldest nights will be an issue. It’s also full of features, like the heat-shedding sidevents, kangaroo pockets, and an internal chest pocket. The Alpini is great for around the campfire, early-morning coffee runs, and late-fall elk hunts, but it is a little fragile. I noticed significant wear and even some tearing when I stored it in my pack carelessly, so take care of it and it'll take care of you. $270; brooks-range.com
