Is it possible to find a high-quality, environmentally responsible touring coat without breaking the bank? Ortovox says so, and their Swisswool Piz Boval Jacket corroborates the claim. The lightweight, natural wool insulation breathes well in the skintrack, and its scuff-resistant, windproof outer layer is made of recycled polyamide. The fit is snug and streamlined, especially at the neck and wrists where snow likes to creep in. Speaking of wrists, Ortovox seems to have finally solved a perennial problem: the cuffs on the Piz Boval hold tight without binding during donning and removal. Finally, if you tend to work up a sweat, fear not; the coat’s reversible. $280.
