Let’s get one thing straight: sleeping on the ground sucks. But it sucks by degrees. There’s the four-inch-car-camping-mattress kind of sleeping on the ground, which doesn’t suck that much, and there’s the got-caught-outside-and-had-to-spend-the-night kind, which sucks a lot. Somewhere closer to the former, there’s backpacking, and sleeping with the Evolite Plus from Therm-A-Rest. Like the name suggests, this pad is light (1.5 lbs), making it convenient for long treks through Montana’s mountains. Like many Therm-A-Rest pads, it’s self-inflating, and it employs ThermaCapture technology, which is what keeps you so warm on frosty spring trips. ThermaCapture is complicated, but the main takeaways are that it allows for added warmth without added weight or bulk. That’s a good thing, right? Available at Bob Ward's and Timber Trails. $120-$140;
