Spring in Bozeman is filled with the feeling of fresh opportunity. Whether it’s getting out the boat, bike, climbing gear, fishing rod, or camper, this is the season for some new adventure.

For the City of Bozeman and its Department of Parks and Recreation, one such opportunity is the implementation of the Parks and Trails Bond. This past November, Bozeman residents overwhelmingly approved a $15 million bond dedicated to the Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Trails (PROST) Plan. This ballot initiative, aimed at continuing, protecting, and enhancing the quality of life in Bozeman made four distinct promises:

  • Protect, preserve, and enhance stream/water quality
  • Acquire and equip new open-space lands, parks, and natural areas.
  • Establish an athletic complex capable of hosting regional events.
  • Connect existing trails within the trail network and develop additional trails in and around the city.

At the time of publication, city commissioners are in the midst of establishing a citizen review committee. The committee will evaluate proposed projects and make recommendations to the commission on projects that meet the ballot language and will serve the residents and visitors of Bozeman to the highest degree. This project will take careful planning and management, but is a worthwhile endeavor for our city.

Bozeman is a special place in the world and as it grows, residents want to ensure that it maintains the quality outdoor amenities and lifestyle that drew many of us here to begin with. Looking ahead, these are exciting times for Bozeman. The effect the PROST Plan will have on our community and its environment will be evident for generations to come.
