Small, lightweight tents are all the rage these days, but for comfortable car-camping, why not break out the big boy? I bought a Coleman Lakeside 8-man tent for last year’s Sweet Corn Festival in Cooke City, and the increased comfort and convenience were well-appreciated by our whole group. The Lakeside set up easily, had plenty of room for our six-person squad and all our gear, and the waterproof floor and rainfly kept the snow and wind out. Mesh panels on the ceiling gave us plenty of ventilation during the night—despite six warm bodies, come morning there wasn’t a drop of condensation inside the tent. With 150 square feet of interior space and a 73-inch center height, the Lakeside was a joy to stumble back to after the Miner Bar shut down—especially as we watched our fellow campers hunch over in their teeny backpacker models. We stood up, stretched out (loudly), and generally just enjoyed the roominess. The Lakeside even has special exterior access ports, so we could access the cooler from inside the tent—no need to strap on boots just to grab a beer. The built-in skylights, gear loft, and doormat added to the overall comfort of our roadside accommodations. The best part is the price—at less than $150, the Lakeside is a worthwhile compromise between wall-tent splendor and small-tent constraints.
