As a serious photographer I can’t count how many times I’ve struggled to schlep my gear around. From Europe to Yellowstone’s backcountry, I’ve never found a convenient method of carrying cameras, large lenses, film, tripods, computers, and other accessories, especially in one bag.

That’s why I was initially overwhelmed by the size and amount of features that came with the Odyssey Camera Pack by Mountainsmith. The main compartment has a solid exterior frame with plenty of adjustable walls that can form numerous sections of different shapes and sizes. In addition to waterproof pockets for film, wires, and other small accessories, the Odyssey has a padded laptop slot guarded by a waterproof layer. I was also excited to find a built-in rain sleeve that covers the whole pack easily.

When it came time to strap on the tripod, I was again surprised with the options. There were three easy methods and many ways to get creative with the strap system (I haven’t given it the ski test yet, but I can’t wait to try this winter). After loading up the pack and enjoying its features, I decided to test out the frame. With three cameras, multiple lenses, and a five-pound tripod, the Odyssey held up great over a 10-mile hike through the rain and into the high country. The chest and waist straps were comfortable and easy to adjust, the entire pack stayed dry, and I had quick and easy access. Overall this pack is great for traveling and can hold anything a photographer might need. $230; mountainsmith.com.
