Spring Hatch

Caddisflies in my ears and up my nose,
Caddisflies riding the brim of my hat.
Inside my waders and inside my clothes,
Trichoptera stuck to my hemostat.

Stowed gear on the porch when I got home late,
Recalled my youth with three fingers of Beam.
Grateful for my reprieve from time’s cruel fate;
To have more sweet days with fish on the stream.

Sunrise, to the porch with a cup of joe:
Caddis on the windows, filling the air,
Emerging from my gear, nowhere to go,
There were little hitch-hikers everywhere!

Imagine my delight, bemused surprise
At this second hatch of yesterday’s flies.
