The section of Mandeville Creek from Montana State University to Bozeman High School (BHS) has been neglected like a misunderstood stepchild for years—but that’s about to change. A tributary of the East Gallatin River, Mandeville was nearly covered decades ago, eliminating most of the stream flow. A small portion of the creek is still visible on the BHS campus, however, and biology teacher Robin Hompesch is spearheading plans to make the creek accessible to the community again. Made possible by grants and donations from Gallatin Valley Land Trust and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the project started in the summer and is expected to run well into fall. Phase One will widen the creek’s channel and place bridges over it. Phase Two will attempt to recreate the natural riparian environment by adding boulders and native vegetation in and around the creek. Phase Three involves creating outdoor classrooms with seating and canopies, encouraging students to appreciate the natural beauty under their noses.
