Park It

Bozeman Parks & Rec update.

In southwest Montana, we don’t hide from winter, we get out more than ever. Thanks to Bozeman Parks & Rec, you can try out a new sport, refresh your backcountry safety skills, and get the kids outside, all at a low cost and close to home. Preregistration is required for all programs, and most require a small fee. Don’t delay—these offerings fill up fast.

Avalanche Awareness & Beacon Practice
In partnership with the Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, Bozeman Parks & Rec is proud to offer two free avalanche lectures. Topics include avalanche terrain recognition, snowpack development, decision-making skills, and basic search-and-rescue procedures. Participants will spend time outside for beacon training, so dress accordingly.

Curling
It's hard to believe this is considered an Olympic sport, but it is in fact one of the oldest at the games. This winter, hit the ice for one-day curling clinics that include a crash-course in vocabulary, on-ice skills, and a quick game. If you’re already into the curling thing, join the adult league. For the kids, the youth curling league teaches curling terminology, equipment, technique, and allows plenty of on-ice game time.

Intro to Snowshoeing
Stay active in the cold by exploring what our local trails have to offer during winter. In this one-day clinic, you’ll learn about proper equipment, safety, terrain selection, and natural history. A tour in one of Bozeman’s parks follows instruction, so prepare to utilize your newfound skills.

SNOWGA
Wait, what? Yes, you read that correctly. For all the diehard yogis out there, Parks & Rec is offering SNOWGA, or yoga on the snow. Join certified yoga instructors and enjoy the winter scenery with a guided snowshoe and yoga class around beautiful Lindley Park.

For the Kids
Bring the family over to Rocky Creek Farm for some Little Explorers time. Children can grab a cup of cocoa, sing carols, and help pick out a Christmas tree. Don’t forget to register for School’s Out Adventure Camp during winter break, where the kids can ice skate, build snow caves, create winter-themed art projects, and more. If that’s not enough, get them on the ice with beginner skating lessons. They’ll learn how to stay on their feet, plus how to get up after they take an inevitable tumble.

Get outside this winter and take advantage of one of these wonderful programs. For more information and registration, go to bozeman.net or call 582-2290.
