If you ask me, Imelda Marcos got a bad rap. Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors knows the value of a good pair of shoes, and if money (and storage space) was no object, why not have a whole fleet of kick-ass footwear, a pair perfectly suited to every imaginable use? Which brings us to the Asolo Tasman XCR, the lightest, fastest, and most water-resistant trail shoe you can add to your footwear quiver. Less than a pound apiece, with surprising traction and torsional rigidity, these trail-running rock-hoppers will get you there quicker and with less fatigue. A three-layer Gore-Tex lining backs up a suede/polyester upper to keep moisture out. Anatomic Absorb insoles endure shocks while Vibram Olympus (a burly rubber-plastic blend) outsoles grab the ground like a set of claws. I took the Tasmans on a moderate trail run/hike in the Bridgers—from the box to mile four in under a half-hour and not so much as a single hot spot to slow my pace. On the steep downhill from the M, they grabbed rock, shale, and trail with equal agility. There was some slippage on those hard downhill foot-plants, but nothing a bigger sock and tighter lace-up shouldn’t fix. For speed hikes on moderate terrain, the Tasmans should be your shoe of choice.
