Abuse Avoidance

Spring season is mud season—there’s no avoiding it. But no matter how eager we are to take to the outdoors after a long winter, it’s important to avoid using the trails until they’re dry.

Why? Because hiking, biking, or other activity on wet or muddy trails can create ruts and widened trails, leaving them in poor condition for future use. Improper use can also cause the soil to wash away, leading to erosion and long-term damage to nearby resources.

Before heading out, talk with local groups or shops to get information on trail conditions. If you’re unsure about a trail, err on the side of caution. It’s best to just stay away until later in the season and opt for a drier trail in the meantime.
