I’ve had my eye on Badlands hunting packs for awhile now, having been impressed with the originality of their hiking/backpacking counterparts, Vortex Backpacks. I decided to test a Badlands 2200 Day Pack, expecting the same appraisal I’d given my Vortex: innovative as hell, with incredible potential—but limited by a few basic design flaws. Basically, a diamond in the rough.

To my delight I found the 2200 to be a finished stone, a polished 5-carrot gem. The folks at Badlands have figured it out. This pack has all the usual time-tested features, but with a handful of above-the-bar attributes: rear-entry access, so no need to set the pack down in the mud or snow; a super-secure bow-holding system that’ll make you forget it’s even on your back; and a blaze-orange, fold-away meat shelf to add visibility and support when hauling out game. Well-placed, elastic pockets let you stash bulky, odd-shaped items like tripods and spotting scopes, while the oversized zipper tabs make getting in and out a snap, even with gloves on. Mesh panels on the bottom of the pockets prevent inadvertent gear spillage. I loaded up the 2200 with 30 pounds plus my bow, and enjoyed a sleek, comfortable fit, as well as the signature Badlands/Vortex ride: tight to the back and solid as hell, like a BMW on smooth pavement.

Here’s the best part: Badlands has an unconditional lifetime warranty—a real one, without a single loophole or exception. Don’t like the pack? Return it for a full refund. Broke a buckle or ripped a flap? Return the pack and they’ll fix it, no charge and no questions asked. Their confidence in their products can be summed up by this statement in their catalog: “We couldn’t care less whether you bought it at a garage sale or a gear swap, if it says Badlands, it’s covered.” I don’t know about you, but the way I tend to abuse gear (and lose receipts), that kind of verbiage sure has a nice ring to it.
