Whether you’re a seasoned climber or just getting started, mark your calendars for this season’s major ice-climbing events, Barrel Mountaineering’s Bozeman Ice Festival and the Northern Lights Trading Company Ice Demo. Both events take place up Hyalite and are a great way to get out and meet other climbers while checking out new gear and learning new tricks. Plus it’s a great excuse to leave the coffee shop and spend a weekend in the beautiful, albeit butt-cold, alpine wonderland that is Hyalite Canyon in late fall.

Nine years ago the good folks at Barrel Mountaineering started the Bozeman Ice Festival, and it’s quickly become one of the premier ice festivals in the region. With world-class climbers from all over the country converging on Bozeman, the Ice Fest is a rare opportunity to learn from the masters. In-depth instruction and gear rentals are included in your $50 fee. Friday is gear fitting and checkout; Saturday is predominately beginner day and Sunday is mainly for intermediate climbers who want to learn some advanced techniques. Slideshows on both Friday and Saturday nights are always entertaining, and a gear raffle and post-fest pizza party on Sunday night brings everyone together for one last round of mingling and mirth. Registration begins October 3. The Ice Fest generally fills up fast, so sign up early. Call Barrel at 582-1335 or stop by the shop on E. Main.

This year marks the 10th annual Northern Lights Ice Demo, so be ready for a few surprises—Mark Rogers and the rest of the Northern Lights staff who donate their time for this event plan to celebrate the decade-old mark in style. The Demo will be held Thursday through Sunday, December 1-4. Gear fitting takes place Thursday night, with a slideshow on Friday and ropes dropping over the Genesis I wall on Saturday and Sunday. All the gear reps will be on-hand to answer questions and, along with Mark, offer insight into proper usage and techniques. Signups begin on November 1, and participation is limited to around 30 people per day. This is a great chance to get out and try out all the new gear on the market, and maybe pick up a few new climbing partners in the process. A $10 rental fee covers you for the whole four days. For more information, stop by the store (located on W. Babcock) or call 586-2225.
