The lightweight revolution often goes a bit far. I mean, are you really gonna notice an extra couple ounces on a four-pound tent? Clothing, however, is another matter entirely. Less weight means reduced bulk and thus added mobility. For unrestricted skiing and ice-climbing in extremely cold weather, I’m a big fan of Traveler’s Tree by Design Salt. Their lightweight, 100% silk undergarments take up very little space in the pack or on your body, while offering significant protection against frigid temperatures. I tend to use the socks as a base layer on those bitter January days at Bridger when most folks take a warm-up break after each run. The gloves are a warm first layer but are also great alone for hiking or hanging out on the deck. The balaclava comes out when the temperature drops into the teens, but the skiing’s so good you don’t even think about leaving. Like wool, silk often goes under-appreciated in today’s world of high-tech fabrics. But like its time-tested counterpart, silk has everything the newfangled textiles do and more: warmth; breathability; effective wicking properties; quick to dry; a smooth, comfortable feel. The Traveler’s Tree variety even has elastic construction for flexibility and increased comfort. Best of all, silk is super-thin—you’ll hardly even know it’s on your body.
