The new H2 Flow Jacket from Helly Hansen works great as a mid-layer or stand-alone jacket. The exterior is a wind- and water-resistant fabric that provides a barrier from the elements. Inside, a mesh liner helps wick moisture away from your body. Sandwiched between these two solid strata is a layer of fleece that resembles Swiss cheese—the holes pull your body heat into the insulating fleece. You control the airflow with two large zippered vents on the front. It seems like a strange system, but I’ve worn this jacket while hiking on cold days, and as I’m ascending a mountain, I simply open the vents to keep from overheating; on the descent, as my body cools off, I zip them back up. This jacket is a great addition to anyone’s winter sports layering system. Available at Helly Hansen. $175; hellyhansen.com
