Keeping one’s body at a comfortable temperature while hiking in the backcountry has always been a challenge. The latest rage in layering versatility and technical outerwear adaptability is the “soft shell,” a hybrid middle layer / outer garment that uses fleece insulation combined with stretch-woven Schoeller and inertia fabrics. Cloudveil’s Serendipity soft shell is perfect for a long backcountry ski approach, or waiting in the wind for your fellow skiers. The Serendipity breathes extremely well and keeps wet and windy weather at bay. The Serendipity fabric also moves and stretches with the wearer—a great feature for active, dynamic outdoor pursuits. Two pockets on the front of the jacket allow for easy stowing of skins, radios, or an extra pair of gloves. Velcro at the end of the sleeves can cinch down, stopping spindrift from entering the jacket. In warm weather, the Serendipity’s sleek design and lightweight make it easy to stow in one’s pack. I tried this jacket during both windy days in the backcountry and snowy days at the resort. In every situation, it kept me comfortably warm and dry. While optimal for the backcountry skier, the Serendipity promises to be excellent for any all-season adventure.
