AT (Alpine Touring, or Randonée) technology has advanced rapidly in the past few years, with many bindings getting lighter and more durable at the same time. Introduced to European skiers two winters ago, the Naxo nx01 Mountain Binding has set the bar even higher. Swiss manufacturer Naxo AG released the binding in the North American market this past season, and so far the results have been overwhelmingly positive. What makes the Naxo different from other AT bindings is how well it handles the rigors of resort skiing, and its unique climbing design. With a dual-pivot toepiece similar to an alpine binding, and a maximum DIN setting of 12, the Naxo is robust enough to hold up in all resort conditions—steeps, crud, even bumps. The pivot points also provide a more efficient stride while climbing, and three different heel-lift settings—0, 6, and 12 degrees—make any reasonable hill easy on the calves. An easy ski-pole-accessible adjustment system means you don’t have to stop your momentum and bend over to move the heel-lifts. And unlike some AT bindings, the Naxo won’t slip into climbing mode while skinning—a specialized collapse mechanism keeps the heel-lift device securely in place. The Naxo fits nearly all alpine and AT boots (it doesn’t accommodate mountaineering boots, however), and adjusts easily to any boot size—making it the only binding you’ll need for both resort and backcountry skiing. The Naxo nx01 is available locally at Northern Lights Trading Company, Roundhouse, and Grizzly Outfitters.
