Bird hunters need both insulation and mobility, making a vest the ideal outerwear option. If you’re willing to spend a few bucks, there’s no better choice than Eddie Bauer’s old-school 1936 Skyliner Vest. The down-filled Skyliner—a reintroduction of the classic Hemingway-era “huntsman” model—uses a quilted pattern to increase warmth without inhibiting movement. This comfy vest quickly became my woobie: warm, cozy, and comforting on the bleakest of days. The large front pockets held my shells, gloves, and other assorted items; I stashed water and birds in the back. The zipper flap kept the wind and drizzle from leaking through. And with its cool retro look, it’s the first huntin’ coat I can wear around town without feeling like a dork. $200; eddiebauer.com.
