PUBLISHED FALL 2003; INFO MAY BE OUTDATED

As they have for the last six years in a row, beginner, experienced, and world-class ice-climbers alike will gather below the frozen waterfalls of Hyalite Canyon this November for a fun-filled weekend known as the Bozeman Ice Festival. Hosted by Barrel Mountaineering and sponsored by Arc’Teryx, this year’s festival will include such notables as Will Gadd, Jim Donini, and Mark Twight, as well as Canadian climbing legend Barry Blanchard. Gear reps from Arc’Teryx, Black Diamond, Grivel, Mammut, Montrail, LaSportiva, Scarpa, and Patagonia will be on hand to offer advice and hand out free demo gear.

There are two different sessions at the festival: one for neophytes just learning to climb, and one for more experienced climbers. The beginner class is held on Saturday and covers everything from basic crampon use to pick placements and body position on steep waterfall ice. On Sunday, advanced students will take to the ice to practice lead-climbing skills, screw placements and anchors, and dry-tooling techniques. Friday and Saturday nights offer slide presentations, well known for their stunning photos and amazing stories. Sunday night wraps up the festival with a pizza party and gear raffle at McKenzie River Pizza.

This year’s festival will be held November 21-23. The cost is $50. Pre-registration is required, beginning October 1st, and space is limited. The Ice Fest is one of the area’s most popular winter events, and spaces fill up fast, so get signed up early. For more information or to sign up, call Barrel Mountaineering at 582-1335.
