Video Contest

With over 30 films submitted—including a dozen damn good ones—our Outdoor Video Contest exposed some impressive local talent. From whitewater kayaking to mountain biking, majestic Yellowstone wildlife to an amusing exposé on couch-sledding, Bozeman-area videographers captured nearly every aspect of southwest Montana on film—and in the process, created an amazing montage of life in the Bozone. Chris Kamman reeled in the win with “Shapeshifters,” a cool timelapse spanning everything from thunderstorms and sunsets to campfires and swirling stars. The video also integrates live-action footage of outdoor sports like kayaking and fishing; the result is an amazing film and a compelling tribute to Bozeman’s outdoor world. Photo Contest

Shooters, take your positions—it’s time to gear up for the 2012 O/B Photo Contest! From landscape to lifestyle, action to wildlife, there’s a category for every aspect of (outdoor) life in southwest Montana. And with three divisions—professional, amateur, and junior (17 and under)—everyone can enter. We’ll feature this year’s top shots in the Fall 2012 issue, and if that’s not enough to open your aperture, focus on this: division winners score $500 in camera equipment from Bozeman Camera and Repair, a photographic helicopter tour with Rocky Mountain Rotors, and $500 in cold, hard cash. Runners-up can take a shot at mounds of outdoor gear and gift cards from local shops. Drooling yet? Well, snap out of it! Grab your camera, get outside, and start shooting. Upload your photos at by August 3.

Top Dog

Raise the woof! The annual Top Dog Contest is back, and we’re on a hunt for Bozeman’s baddest-to-the-bone hounds. Tell us why your camping comrade, fishing friend, or backcountry buddy rules the pack. Vie for the title of “Bozeman’s 2012 Top Dog” and a $250 pooch-friendly package from Dee-O-Gee; runners-up get to sniff around the store to pick out their own treats. Enter your favorite canine companion at by November 2.

Farmer Tan

As the skies clear and our skin’s pathetic pallor greedily soaks up the summer sun, the inevitable farmer tan emerges—and we want to see your best. Whatever the line of demarcation—interlaced Chaco stripes, white bands beneath bracelets and wristwatches, semi-scorched scalps, or just the standard milky bicep adjoining a florid forearm—send it to us by August 15. We’ll publish the sweetest summer stripes in our Fall 2012 issue and let the winners rifle through the fabled O/B Treasure Chest. Check out for more info and a submission form.

Hit List

Can summer get any sweeter? Oh yes it can! Add 20 quintessential outdoor activities in southwest Montana and a chance to score $5,000 in North Face gear and you’ve got the 2012 Hit List—a compilation of all the activities we wish we were doing instead of staring at a computer. Score points while visiting a ghost town, mountain biking Porcupine Trail, running a 5k, floating the Missouri Headwaters, and more. How, you ask? Simply take a photo of yourself completing each task and send them to us by October 5. Five categories—Most Points, Most Tasks Completed, Best Photo, Best Story, and Best Wild Card—give every outdoorsman, woman, and child the chance to take home the goods. So get out outside, have a great summer, and win big! Visit for the full list.
