Sof-Krate N2

It's clear that Noz to Noz designer June Carter has thought long and hard about what it's like to be a dog. When told that I had a hard-working little bird dog who needed comfortable sleeping quarters for fall hunting trips, she was pleased to hear it—though she pointed out that a dog needn't be an athlete to deserve the same comfort and travel support that we ourselves desire.

The engineering and thoughtfulness that’s gone into the Noz to Noz Sof-Krate N2 is thus no surprise. It's far lighter than the cumbersome molded-plastic airport kennels, and it folds into a portfolio-sized suitcase when not in use. Its zippered tent-style mesh netting allows access from any side, and when you put the kennel in the back of your car, you can see through it via your rearview mirror. The Crypton bedding also fits into the kennel. The only caveat is that a naughty dog might be tempted to chew through the netting. Mine hasn't yet, though that may be only because it hasn't occurred to her. $79-$129, depending on size; noztonoz.com.
