Review: Flint Hills Vest

A fly vest is kinda like a home: all empty spaces tend to get filled. Nature may abhor a vacuum, but I like the Flint Hills Vest from Fishpond. Although the pockets are abundant (eight in front, four inside, two in back), they’re also rather small and trim, which prevents pointless overstuffing of the vest. The Flint Hills is also lightweight and form-fitting, with mesh fabric throughout for breathability and all-day comfort. It’s also got adjustable shoulder and waist straps that allow me to accommodate bulky clothing on those cold spring mornings, but then easily snug up the vest as I shed layers in the afternoon. This vest is perfect for the pseudo-minimalist: one who likes a decent inventory but wants to keep the bulk to a minimum. Available at Montana Troutfitters, Powder Horn, Angler’s West, Sweetwater Fly Shop, and the River’s Edge. $89; fishpondusa.com.
