If this pack could talk, I'm sure it'd say some nasty things about me. Deuter designed the ACT Trail 32 as a technical dayhiking pack with ice axe and trekking pole attachments, a built-in rain cover, and hydration bladder pocket. So far this "spring," the poor pack has barely seen a dirt road, let alone a hiking trail. Despite my blatant misuse of such an outdoor-oriented pack, it withstood the rigorous course schedule of a full-time college student and has improved the condition of my back at the same time-an upgrade I owe largely to the ACT's Aircontact system and Delrin frame rods. The pack's contour fits my back perfectly and sports a slim profile, which keeps weight as close to my body as possible. Additionally, I could easily reach the deep, dark interior of this thing via the two-way zip-panel access, which made digging out buried gear or books as easy as skipping class to hit the trails! Available at Gallatin Alpine Sports, Northern Lights, Chalet Sports, and Round House. $130; deuterusa.com.
