The Lowa Renegades are some of the lightest waterproof boots I've ever worn. I did not encounter any of that sensation of slight clumsiness that accompanies wearing most boots. And they're extremely comfortable to all parts of the foot—more comfortable than my tennis shoes. They're good for lightweight hiking—fast and quick in the woods. And they support the foot well, if not necessarily ankles and knees, due to their lightness. The low cut of the ankle necessitates the wearing of gaiters, even in warm weather, to keep them truly waterproof; otherwise rain and snow from summer ice fields will find its way in over the top and down into the boot. I had thought that with their light weight, they might be susceptible to becoming trashed-out more easily, but so far they have held up well, in rocks as well as mud, creek, forest, and airport. $170; lowaboots.com.
