What are the Odds?

It was harder to get a license to hunt buffalo than it was to get into Harvard this year, according to statistics from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks: this year's 4,402 applicants had about a one-percent chance of snagging one of the FWP's 44 licenses offered. And because nonresidents won six of the 44 licenses, the odds were even lower for Montanans.

Those auspicious few can hunt from November 15 to February 15. But there is a chance for those who didn't make the cut: this year FWP plans to issue 100 cow/calf licenses if "a sufficient number" of bison migrate into Montana from Yellowstone National Park, according to a FWP press release.

All bison hunters have to watch an orientation DVD about hunting bison, and the licenses have geographic restrictions; some may be used near Gardiner and others only near West Yellowstone. For more information about the hunt, visit fwp.mt.gov.
