After stubbornly clinging to my two-piece cheapo fly rod for the last ten years, I may finally be converted. Winston loaned me a LT 5-Piece for the summer season, and ohmigod does this thing cast sweet. I packed the super-compact case around for three months and was amazed at how easily I could get a fly wherever I wanted it, and with absolute ease. The soft tip and medium-fast action gave me impressive sensitivity and surprising castability with various fly weights. All five pieces fit together snugly; I could cast all day without so much as a millimeter of creep. The LT 5-Piece comes in various lengths and weights, but I found the 4-weight, 8’9” model was about as versatile as a rod gets—it worked great on alpine lakes, small streams, and even large rivers like the Yellowstone. This rod ain’t cheap, but then again, few of the finer things in life are. $700; winstonrods.com.
