Just across the street from the M trail parking lot, the Gallatin Valley Land Trust (GVLT) plans to build a new one-mile trail loop to the top of Drinking Horse Mountain, the prominent knob rising above the Fish Technology Center. Volunteers already completed a short section of the trail at GVLT’s 15th Annual Trails Day June 2. Assuming fundraising goes well, you’ll be able to see far to the east from Drinking Horse by late fall.

But as Ted Lange, GVLT Community Trails Planner will tell you, little happens quickly with projects like Drinking Horse. Permitting for the trail has taken over five years. GVLT still needs $88,000 to complete the trail, add a bridge, build a fence, and put signage on the property. “We hope to get many large and small donations from both individuals and businesses and hopefully some grant funding as well,” Lange says.

Besides reducing traffic on the M trail, the top of Drinking Horse Mountain will offer a 360-degree panorama and spectacular views of the Absarokas. Call 587-8404 to donate
