I was in search of a backcountry ski package that would be as effective on groomers and packed snow as it would be cutting trail through fresh powder. My research ended with the Madshus Epoch skis paired with their Glittertind BC boots. The Epoch is a confident, go-anywhere ski. I was able to quickly cover ground up or down hills, plus blaze my own trail through uncut snow. The bases provide excellent kick-and-glide with a progressive, positive-set waxless pattern—aka, they grip well. The progressive-radius sidecut and full-length edges make turning effortless and offer control on icy trails. The Glitterind BC boot adds to the ease as well. These boots have an adjustable, rigid outer-ankle support and a lacing system that keeps the foot and ankle working together. A built-in gaiter, featuring MemBrain Softshell technology, sucks the inside moisture out, while keeping the cold stuff where it belongs. The light Thinsulate inners also help keep the feet warm on cold days without overheating. The outsoles provide traction when walking and a solid connection point to the Epoch. Available at Timber Trails. Ski $340, boot $255; madshus.com
