All of the mild weather has helped produce some great angling opportunities in the area. Gallatin River Fly Fishing has really improved below the canyon and the ice shelves have receeded and slush is not an issue. The trout are in winter time lies which means slow water with some depth. When you find the right holding water they will be stacked in high abundance. Nymphing has been the ticket with small egg patterns, san juan worms and RS2s.
What a difference a couple of days can make. Floated Emigrant to Mallards on Saturday (6/30) and again on Monday (7/2). The level has gone done about 600 CFS, but the clarity has improved dramatically. The fishing was slow on Saturday, as opposed to Monday. The best action was an olive rubber legs with a flashback dropper.
Floated Deer Cr. to Lava on July 4th, the water is starting to get pretty low, but still a great time. If you're planning a float in a raft with a frame, you better make it pretty quick. The guides are still running the waves though and will continue.
The flow is dropping, making the fishing great. Had great luck on a purple haze with a small copper john dropper. Maidenrock down to Salmon fly watch out for rocks just under the water.
